A fighting chance for local boxer

After being a dominant force in both local and national amateur boxing circles, local lad Gary Young, 18, has taken the brave step of moving into the professional leagues.

While this move was anticipated by a lot of Gary's supporters the timing of the decision comes as a surprise to many, as he was tipped to represent Scotland in the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Manchester. 'It wasn't really an issue as I hadn't ever been guaranteed a place in the team.' said Gary, 'The time was right for me and I didn't see the point in wasting a couple of months on a possibility.'

During an amateur career that has spanned seven years, Gary has repeatedly proved that he is one of the best in Scotland and has represented his country numerous times in Europe. Despite this level of success, one of Gary's most treasured records is being undefeated Eastern District Champion in his weight class since his first entry in the competition seven years ago. He last defended this title in November at the Tartan Club, Fountainbridge, where his victory was a walkover as none of the competition would fight him. 'They asked me to step down from the competition,' said Gary 'I refused as there was no way I was giving away a title I had held since day one without a fight.'

It's unlikely that things will come quite as easily for Gary in the professional arena, but his past successes can only act as the perfect starting block to a promising career. Gary's first test will come on 11th March as he takes to the ring at Glasgow's Kelvin Hall under the billing 'Real Scots!', where he will fight alongside stablemates Alex Arthur and Scott Harrison.

In appreciation of Gary's local supporters, promoters are running coaches from Gilmerton Community Centre to the fight. Call 07900 102 196 or 07833 631 914 for further details.
