 On a Mission with WRVS

Once a week Bill and Elma Morrison and Jessie Beveridge step out of their homes on a 'mission'...a mission to give a bit of their time to the local community.

Jessie walks the short distance to Liberton Hospital. It's only 10 minutes away and she looks forward to the exercise twice a week for a few hours, as it gets her out of the house and away from the housework! Jessie volunteers for WRVS in the shop at Liberton Hospital. She's been volunteering now for over 10 years.

For Jessie, her work at the WRVS shop gives her the chance to meet a whole range of people and she really enjoys serving them, having a chat and making their visit to the hospital just a little easier! Over the years Jessie has really made some good friends through her work with WRVS.

"I really enjoy coming in twice a week and I look forward to getting together with the team, we help and support one another, whenever we can"

Every Friday morning Bill and Elma Morrison start their mission, he goes off on his bike and she takes the bus. They both head in the same direction - the Council Garage on Leith Walk, where they both join their teams of Meals on Wheels drivers and helpers. Bill and Elma do their bit in delivering over 1368 meals to the elderly and housebound in the Edinburgh area each week.

Elma was absolutely delighted recently when one of her blind customers said,

"I always look forward to Friday because I know that I'll get to hear your cheerful voice and have a hot meal at the same time!"

Jessie, Elma and Bill would love more people to come forward to volunteer, young and old, men or women...it really is open to all. They do feel a great deal of satisfaction when delivering their meals or gifting money back to the local hospital. This year WRVS is gifting back £2,500 to Liberton Hospital. It's at times like this that they get a real sense of pride and purpose from their 3 hour commitment to WRVS each week.

If you would like to find out how good it feels to volunteer like Bill, Elma or Mary why not step outside your door and set yourself a 'mission' for the day, after all it's only 'impossible' in the movies. In reality you can be a hero or heroine by making a difference to someone's quality of life with WRVS!
