Millennium Memorial

Green fingered pupils from Prestonfield Primary School have adopted the War Memorial in Prestonfield Avenue.

Until a campaign by ex-serviceman and local resident, Jimmy Laird, the memorial had become run down and vandalised.

The Primary 7 pupils have worked on designing the new garden as part of a class project on the Second World War.

Following the success of the local community's application for a Millennium Grant to help fund tools, plants and upkeep, future Primary 7 pupils from the school will be involved in the maintenance of the garden, with a little help from the Recreation Department.

Cllr Williamson, in one of his last official duties as local Councillor and Executive Member for Education told the Echo: 'The work of the school will ensure that future generations in the area will fully understand the sacrifices made by so many young men in the Second World War.'

Joining the children at the launch were Cllr Paul Williamson, Nigel Griffiths MP, Jimmy Laird from the British Legion and other ex-servicemen.
