Preventing crime in your Community

Hotspots

House break-ins (and attempted) were reported in Gilmerton 11, Southhouse 9, Gracemount 8, Mayfield Road and Inch 3 each, and Prestonfield 2.

Theft (and attempted) of motor vehicles were highest in the Mayfield Road area where there were 4 reports. Prestonfield, Inch, Gracemount, Gilmerton and Southhouse had 3 each, Moredun had 1.

Vandalism figures went up noticeably last month, particularly in Gracemount where there were 20 incidents reported. Southhouse had 15, Moredun 13, Mayfield Road and Inch 11 each, Gilmerton 10, and Prestonfield 3.

Police have made 4 reports to the Procurator Fiscal regarding the possession and/or supply of drugs, in the Prestonfield and Mayfield Road areas.

Car Owners

Police advise that thieves are targeting car radios and C.D. players. Avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention to your car by removing all valuables from sight, lock everything in the boot or remove it all together. Particularly at this time of year, remember to close car windows every time you leave your vehicle unattended.

Mobile Phone Users

Beware - if you get a text message asking you to call a number beginning with 090 the advice is to delete the message immediately. Some mobile users have called and later discover their own number has been effectively stolen, used by another, resulting in huge phone bills for the owner.

Off Road Motor Cycles

Silly season is here again. This has been an ongoing problem within the Burdiehouse, Gilmerton and Moredun areas. Insp. Lesley Clark of Howdenhall Station has taken steps to address the problem. If you see a motor cycle being used in a public area, off the road, please telephone Howdenhall Police Station tel: 666 2222. Parents who allow their children to use these bikes should be aware that it is not only illegal, but a real problem in terms of the physical safety for their children and for the public.

Panel News

Panel members were involved at the Emergency Services Fun Weekend which took place at Cameron Toll Shopping Centre. 'Know The Score' was our theme and many parents took the opportunity to obtain information about drugs.

Sgt. Steve Harding, will be leaving to go to a new post in September. He has been Panel Secretary for four years. Panel members thank him for his efforts and wish him well in his new job.
