Oil from rocks in Gilmerton

Have you ever wondered what goes on inside the DTI Core Store on Gilmerton Road?

Nearly 300kms of rock, enough to stretch from, Edinburgh to John OÕGroats, are stored in the DTI Core Store on Gilmerton Road and form part of a National Archive. These rocks are samples taken by oil companies when they drill wells off our shores to aid them in their exploration.

On Saturday 29th September in association with our main British Geological Survey office at Murchison House (Kings Buildings site) we will be having an Open Day. Call in any time between 10am and 5pm and Geologists from the BGS will be available to show visitors around and talk about the geology of oil. A free shuttle bus will run hourly between the Core Store and

the main BGS office at Murchison House, West Mains Road.

l Pick up rock cored from 260 million year old sand dunes

l Look at a 320 million year tropical swamp now preserved as coal

l Touch the 65 million year old boundary marking the mass extinction of the dinosaurs

l Smell the oil in a 150 million year old sandstone reservoir

l Taste 260 million year old salt

There will be something for everyone with organised activities for children including building a model of an oil field. Come along on Saturday and find out more about the oil and gas hidden off our shores.
