Celebrating culture

The Celebration of Culture Group has been meeting in the Burdiehouse/Southhouse Community Centre since March.  An exhibition of the artwork created by the group of 9 boys and girls will be on display at Gracemount Leisure Centre and the Yellow Dot Com Internet Cafe at Leith from May 15th until June 1st.

The group, which is run by Pauline Methven and Sandra George, have been meeting since March.  During the last few weeks, Pauline and Sandra have noticed that the children have become much more confident in the group.  At the start, Pauline says that the group were very well-behaved and quiet, but now they are busy enjoying themselves and are a real challenge!  The group meet for two hours each week and in that time, they have time for an activity, such as painting, other art, and storytelling, as well as 'free play', which allows the children to play how they like, under the guidance of Sandra and Pauline.

POSITIVE
The group aims to develop positive play, encouraging the children to play constructively, and take part in activities that are multi-cultural, such as henna handpainting, trampolining and kite flying.  The children are encouraged to develop their own multi-culturalism, as well as consider the effects of any racism they have seen.  The exhibition of the group's artwork at the Gracemount Leisure Centre and the Yellow Dot Com Internet Cafe in Leith will include henna handpainting and photograms, which are photographs that depict some part of the young artist's life.

The exhibition, from May 15th until June 1st, is a celebration of the multi-culturalism of South Edinburgh, and will showcase the young talent in South Edinburgh for the rest of Edinburgh to see.

While the group is now closed to new members, contact Pauline at Burdiehouse Community Centre for information on future projects - 664 2210.
