No summer closures for city libraries

The new community library at Newtoft Street opens for business on 25th June and will remain open throughout the summer. Kung Fu display on 25th June (7.00pm) to celebrate opening.

The City of Edinburgh Council has announced that all of the city’s twenty five community libraries are to remain open throughout the coming summer period.

Previous budget saving exercises have meant that, since 1997, city library services have closed for a two week period each summer. Now the City of Edinburgh Council budget for 2001-2002 has provided extra money to recruit additional staff, so as to prevent summer closures.

Activities at community libraries include the Reading Carnival, which will encourage children to read a variety of books over the summer break, as well as take part in creative pastimes such as crafts, face painting, fancy dress, story telling, and competitions - all free of charge.
