Do you care for someone with a mental illness?
Severe mental illness can cause major disturbances in the way someone thinks, feels and behaves. Life is experienced in a way that can seem very different from that of other
people.
Caring for someone who suffers from a severe mental illness can be a stressful and isolating
experience.
Finding a source of understanding and support can help with some of these
feelings.
A carer is anyone who has had to change their lifestyle in order to care for, or has had to take responsibility for another person who is experiencing mental health problems. A carer may be a relative, partner or friend, young, old or a child. A carer does not necessarily live with the person they care
for.
The Edinburgh Carers Officer is employed by the National Schizophrenia Fellowship (Scotland) and is available to carers’ and their families to provide one to one support, group support, advice and information surrounding mental illness and carers’
rights.
If you identify with any of the above, or if you would like more information, please contact
