Breast Screening Programme

The NHS Scottish Breast Screening Programme offers a routine breast x-ray (mammogram) to all women aged 50+ every 3 years. Breast screening can help find small changes in the breast before there are any other signs or symptoms of cancer.

Various medical centres throughout the city will shortly be inviting women to attend for breast screening.

All eligible women aged 50-64 will receive a letter of invitation approximately 3 weeks prior to their screening appointment.

Women aged 65+ are not automatically sent a letter of invitation, and therefore should telephone for an appointment.

Breast cancer can affect any woman and the risk of getting breast cancer increases the older you are. Breast screening does not prevent breast cancer but treatment has the best chance of being successful if changes are detected early. Your whole appointment at the screening centre will last approximately 20 minutes. Some women may find the breast x-ray procedure uncomfortable, but it will only last a few seconds.

We would encourage you to take up this opportunity for breast screening and if you have missed previous appointments, it is still important to attend this one.
