Preventing crime in your
community
Hotspots
The Gilmerton, Inch, and Gracemount areas each suffered 6
house break-ins (or attempted) during May. Moredun had 4, Mayfield Road 3, and Southhouse
2.
Theft (and attempted) of motor vehicles occurred in Inch 12, Gilmerton 7, Moredun 5, Mayfield Road 4, Gracemount and Southhouse 1
each.
Reported vandalism increased last month - Inch 21, Moredun 13, Gilmerton 12, Southhouse 10, Mayfield Road 5, and Prestonfield
4.
Police targeting those concerned with the supply and/or possession of
drugs have had 100% success rate. There were targets in Gracemount 13, Mayfield Road 7, and Southhouse
4.
It may look like I have missed out figures for Prestonfield this month, apart from reported vandalism. It may be reassuring for residents of Prestonfield to note that there were no reported house break-ins, theft of motor vehicles, or drugs in that area.
Most interesting and by comparison the crime figures for Newington (covered from Howden Hall Police Station but not in the Echo area) were higher than three of the local beats for house break-ins, and six of the local beats for theft of motor
vehicles.
Drivers Be Warned
Inspector Grant Allan, Traffic Branch, informs me that a Drugs Driving initiative will be carried out on 29th & 30th June, and 1st July within Lothian & Borders. Drivers stopped will be asked to do a field impairment test if police suspect they are under the influence of drugs. Drug Driving is not only a chargeable offence for people taking illegal Class A and B drugs, but also for many prescription and ‘over the counter’ drugs bought from
chemists.
This will be followed by a Scotland wide campaign on drink driving on 13th & 14th
July.
There will be a Summer Safety campaign in Lothian & Borders from 13th to 24th August when the emphasis will be on use of seat belts, speeding, drink/drug
driving.
Holiday Makers - Points To Remember:-
Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your property and ensure mail is pushed right through your letterbox or not visible through a glass
door. Cancel milk and newspapers. Use timer switches to lights. Make sure you have locked up securely, including the garden hut and
garage.
Taking these measures will put a house breaker off, they will look for an easier place to break in
to.
Parents
School holidays bring their problems when children are allowed out to play unsupervised both in terms of their own personal safety, and the seasonal rise in petty crime, vandalism and nuisance. During this time South Edinburgh Partnership are running a pretty comprehensive
Fun In The Sun
project, please encourage your children to join in the various events put on for them throughout the area. Children are less likely to get into trouble when they are actively involved in something
supervised.
