Misuse of city dumps
An increase in the amount of rubbish delivered to the
city's three public dump sites of over 90% since 1995 has raised
concerns that the facilities are open to abuse by businesses wanting to
avoid paying for waste disposal or landfill tax.
The previous policy of accepting, without challenge,
waste from unmarked vehicles is no longer sustainable and the Council is
reviewing this approach and diverting all such vehicles to the
Powderhall Depot where they can be monitored and recorded.
Based on results of a survey carried out in March, it
was estimated that 20% of commercial waste finds its way into the city
dumps every year.
Councillor Brian Fallon, Executive Member for
Environment said,
"This places an extra burden on the Council and
on city residents who legitimately use the sites. By clamping down
on this practice we can then re-invest in the service and extend opening
hours."
