Fire Watch
The cold nights and dark days of winter are now upon
us. It is at this time of year that we use electrical appliances that
have often lain forgotten over the summer months. We should make an
effort to check that they are in safe working order before using them.
Take five minutes to check that your electrical appliances
have a properly rated fuse, and that the wires in the plug are fitted
correctly. If you can find the manufacturer's operating instructions,
read them to remind yourself of the do's and dont's that apply.
Many appliances can be safely left plugged in and
switched on permanently, but some can't and they have restrictions on
their use. If you're in any doubt about the correct operation of your
electrical appliances, contact a competent electrician for advice or
help.
Christmas is the time when we introduce additional
decorations and lighting into our homes. Check that these items are
manufactured to European Standards and marked with a 'CE' mark. This
confirms that these items are of a safe design and construction, and
will have written instructions on how to use them. You can save yourself
a lot of trouble and your house a lot of damage by reading the
instructions and following them. It is not the first time that the wrong
light bulb, a faulty plug or incorrect fuse has been the cause of a
fire.
Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. If you
need information or advice on any fire safety matter please contact the
brigade on Freephone 0800 169 0320 or call in at Liberton Fire Station.
In the event of an emergency always phone 999.
