Preventing Crime in your Community

Hotspots

House break-ins (and attempted) in Moredun 7, Gracemount and Mayfield Road 5 each, Inch 4. Prestonfield, Southhouse and Gilmerton 2 each.

Theft (and attempted) of motor vehicles were highest in the Mayfield Road area with 7, Prestonfield 6, Gilmerton 3, and there were 2 each in Inch, Gracemount, Southhouse and Moredun.

Vandalism figures went up throughout the area last month. Moredun suffered 27 incidents of vandalism. Gilmerton and Gracemount had 19 incidents reports in each area, and Southhouse had 18. Inch 14, Prestonfield 4, and Mayfield Road 3.

Bogus Callers

Police and public alike were shocked by the callousness of crimes committed against a pensioner couple in the Newington area last month. I am sure I am not alone in hoping the couple make a full recovery, and that the guilty parties are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Festive Road Safety Campaign

Drivers be advised, Lothian & Borders Police will carry out their Festive Road Safety Campaign from 10th December to 7th January. Do not drink and drive. By drinking alcohol or driving under the influence of drugs (even some prescription and over the counter drugs) you could cause a serious or fatal accident. You will lose your license and possibly your job as a result. On this issue Police have no discretion.

Personal Safety Over Festive Season

If you are out and about over the festive period wrap up warm and make sure you do not put yourself in a situation where you are not in control of yourself, i.e. get so drunk you are vulnerable to accident, hypothermia, or attack. If going to the Hogmanay celebrations on Princes Street this year remember, only plastic bottles will be allowed through the cordon.

Panel News

Members of South Edinburgh Crime Prevention Panel have been out delivering leaflets to assist police, in response to the recent attack on an elderly couple in Newington.

Off-Road Bikers

A report is to be put before South Edinburgh Partnership's Community Safety Group at their next meeting. I have spoken to some off-road bikers but would like to hear from more.

Please contact Max Volino on 664 3275 if you would like your ideas or views to be heard.

Personal Safety Alarms and Garden Shed Alarms

are available from South Edinburgh Crime Prevention Panel to callers at St. Leonard's Police Station. The alarms cost £6.00 and £10.50 respectively, and make an ideal Christmas gift.

May we wish everyone a very safe and happy Christmas.
