Youth Magazine hot off the press

As we went to press, our Youth Editorial Group was gearing up for the launch of their new magazine BRANDED.

The eight-strong team of local 14-16 year olds have been working on the project for some time and can now finally celebrate as Issue 1 hits the schools.

Thanks to the hard work and commitment of the Echo Board and with grateful thanks to the South Edinburgh Partnership for funding, the first edition of Branded has finally been produced.

BRANDED has been developed as a youth magazine for the area and is written and designed by the local youth.

As it stands, BRANDED is a unique project in Scotland, and possibly in the UK as well.

The ethos behind BRANDED is to give the young people of South Edinburgh a voice in their community and give them the opportunity to work together towards a common goal.

While still at an experimental stage, it is hoped that BRANDED will flourish and become a trendsetter in youth publishing. BRANDED is currently produced quarterly, but will hopefully become a bi-monthly as the operation gains momentum.

BRANDED will be distributed via the local secondary schools, community centres, Gracemount Leisure Centre and local libraries.

If your son or daughter is thinking about becoming a journalist, graphic designer or photographer, why not point them in our direction.

Not only will they gain the experience of working on the youth mag, many top journalists started in Community Newspapers, they will also have the satisfaction of doing something for their own area.

Once again, we would like to thank the Echo Board for having the enthusiasm to see the idea turn into reality, the youngsters and local agencies who helped find enough info to fill it - and DAVID ROBB NEWSAGENTS, who we forgot to thank on the actual mag!

To find out more, or to become involved in this unique project, call Susie Donkin or Richard Biggs on 621 7065.
