Local boxing club suffers a crushing blow as fire wrecks havoc

Gilmerton Amateur Boxing Club was dealt a crushing blow at the beginning of this month when a fire swept through Gilmerton Church Hall, destroying a great deal of their equipment.

Head coach Rab Young said 'I'm devastated. Things were going so well for the club recently and now we're back to square one.'

The bad news came less than a week after the club held a fundraising event at the Sheraton Grand on Festival Square. The night, which featured a sit down meal, sports memorabilia auction and a number of exhibition bouts from club members, raised £3,500 for the club. This money had been intended to go towards keeping the club running for the next year, but will no have to be invested in replacing their lost equipment.

This is obviously a big blow for the club, but the biggest concern has to lie with club protégé Gary Young. At the time of going to press, Young was preparing to defend his Senior Eastern District title and gearing up to be involved in next year's Commonwealth Games. Hopefully this set back won't effect his training and Young, along with the other lads from Gilmerton ABC, will move from strength to strength.
