Walking on Ayr!

Against all odds, Liberton Bowling Club have performed a hat-trick of giant killing acts to reach the Scottish National Bowling Finals in Ayr in August.

Their winning rink comprises David Ramage (Skip), Bill Laing, John Thorburn and Dave Watson who fought through the initial local South Edinburgh knock-out matches before encountering the larger east of Scotland clubs Carrick Knowe in the quarter-final, Mayfield in the semi-final and eventually Currie in the District finals at Bainfield on 12 June. Their success follows on from last year when the Club won both the South of Edinburgh League and the Top-Ten competitions.

Club President Bob Cardwell added, "This is a great achievement for our local Club. It is the ambition of all bowlers to play in the National Finals and for the second time in twelve years we have qualified against the odds to represent the South of Edinburgh Bowling Association and our District. Small Club or not, we look forward to participating in a great bowling competition in August. We’ll be taking through a busload of support for the lads."

The District final at Bainfield was crammed with hundreds of spectators including a great support from the Liberton bowlers and families. What surprised those at the event was the margin of the victory with an unbeatable winning scoreline of 23-6 with still two ends left to play. Again, Liberton and South Edinburgh bowling is on the map.

The more formal National finals in Ayr will be a different experience entirely for the Liberton club with games against even more County players and internationalists, but having performed so well to date, the Rink are totally undaunted by this challenge and are really looking forward to having their name emblazoned in lights!

Best of luck in August, chaps! Walk on Ayr!
