Do you know the Score

A new initiative to combat drug driving was launched at Lothian & Borders Police Forensic Science Lab last month, after drug-driving was named as the third biggest killer on our roads - only speeding and drink driving cause more accidents.

Research has shown that 18% of people killed in road accidents had used illegal drugs. The campaign will focus on both education and enforcement and officers have been specially trained to carry out a series of roadside tests to detect drivers under the influence of drugs.

The tests include balance, co-ordination and perception as well as the ability to understand and follow instructions.

Police have also been working with Crew 2000, who will be handing out leaflets to educate club and pub goers.

Launching the initiative as part of the Know the Score campaign were (L-R) Assistant Chief Constable David Strang, Scottish Minister for Transport Sarah Boyack, Scottish Deputy Justice Minister Iain Gray and Director of the Scottish Drugs Enforcement Agency (SDEA) Jim Orr.
