Residents of Ferniehill are to benefit from a new and improved community park following the collapse and demolition of the houses at Ferniehill.

There is now an area of open ground roughly double the original grassed area with its childrens’ play-ground. This is bordered by Ferniehill Road, Ferniehill Street and Ferniehill Way.

City of Edinburgh Council regard this as a unique opportunity to create a superb community park, created, used and named by local people. The Council will be working hard with local people through steering groups and consultation to achieve this aim.

An Open Day has been held at Ferniehill Portacabins and a steering group has been set up. This group has the responsibility of developing permanent proposals for the site and for keeping the local community informed and involved in this.

On the steering group there are local residents, housing development, housing management and recreation staff and the local councillor, Sheila Gilmore. The group also has its own landscape architect.

While the permanent proposals are being developed, interim landscaping works are being put in place. Following comments from the Open Day the steering group has approved these temporary plans.

These consist of grassing, fencing off vulnerable areas and the introduction of temporary footpaths. The works contractor will begin on 9th or 16th of July depending of the availability of materials over the trades holiday. The work should take 2-3 weeks to complete.

The steering group has now produced a first draft for the permanent proposals and this is going out to consultation. This is a concept plan, showing which part of the park should be put to what use. This plan is based on the suggestions from the Open Day questionnaires, and includes a toddlers play area, teenage area and garden area.

The current design is making the most of the superb views of the park over the city, in line with feedback received at the open day.

The plan will be on display at Gilmerton Community Centre at Drum Street, at the South Local Housing Office at Captain’s Road and hopefully at the Library at Newtoft Street (if space permits) from Wednesday 1st to Wednesday 22nd of August. There will be response sheets for you to give feedback on what you think of these plans.

On Thursday the 23rd of August there will be an Open day at Gilmerton Community Centre, Drum Street from 2-4 and 6-8pm.

By this time the landscape architect will have had time to add more detail to the plans. He will also be there to discuss the plans with you along with staff from City of Edinburgh Council Housing Development and Recreation Dept.

This is only a first draft and will be improved in line with the feedback from you!

NAME THE PARK COMPETITION!

We have ideas from you as to what should be in the park, but no ideas as to what to call it!

Go down in local history as the person who named Ferniehill community park!

Send your suggestion to Heather Bayley, Housing Development, Level 3, 23-25 Waterloo Place, Edinburgh EH1 3BH.
