Misuse of City Dumps

At last! as we read in the July "Echo", our council intends restricting civic amenity dumps to their intended and only legal purpose.

The dumps are meant to receive only household waste. The law states this clearly, as do the public notices.

Yet day after day our council has been allowing ‘cowboys’ to jettison non-household rubbish on the sites, so long as the vans were not lorry size and carry no commercial signs.

I live near the Old Dalkeith Road site. For almost five years I’ve watched the rules being flouted. Honest citizens are subsidising ‘fly’ firms which should be paying a fee to get rid of their junk.

My estimate is that up to 100 vans dump illegally each day. There was similar law-breaking at the other Edinburgh sites.

I’ve complained to the Director of the department concerned, to the Chief Executive and to various Councillors including Councillor Fallon (who has overall responsibility for waste disposal).

I’ve tried to interest the ombudsman and the local authority auditors. All this has been without result.

Now some remedial action has been proposed. But what rules have been enforced? Will I get a letter from our council and the rest admitting I was right?
